CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

Everlee huffed. That had certainly been a lousy conversation with Mason.

She tried not to sigh loudly as she cooked in Mason’s antiquated kitchen. He’d warned her he hadn’t updated it yet, but she hadn’t expected the electric behemoth of a stove with half the burners out, nor had she counted on there being no range hood or dishwasher. She guessed she’d been spoiled in her newish apartments in Chicago.

Still, the lack of amenities kept her brain engaged on cooking rather than the discussion she’d had with Mase. Not that perseverating would do her any good, anyway. He’d laid it all out. He wanted to pursue something with her, just at a slow pace. She grimaced.

How slow was he talking?

Clearly there was no set blueprint for his comfort level agenda, but… Would they continue to kiss? Would there be any touching? How long before they’d get naked together? How many weeks or months until they had sex? These were all questions that gnawed at her. She was a healthy, vibrant woman in her prime, and physical contact was high on her list of “must-haves” with a partner.

She hadn’t dated much while in Chicago, a few guys who she’d thankfully found out were cop-groupies before she got her feelings involved. Other than that small handful, she’d hooked up every now and then to keep her libido sated. Still, it had been probably six months since she’d had any itches scratched, and she wondered how much longer she could go without beginning to resent Mason for taking her off the market but not providing what she needed for her sexual sanity.

Dammit. She flipped a breaded eggplant in the ancient frying pan and cursed herself. Was she being unreasonable? She was getting what she wanted. Mostly. A chance to date Mason. A chance to see if they really had something special together or if she’d made it all up in her head, being in his life after years’ worth of unrequited yearnings where he was concerned.

So…

If he didn’t want to get down and dirty right away, she should be relishing that; especially after the way she’d been shabbily treated by a small group of her supposed peers in Chicago. To that entitled factor, it had been all about sex, or the lack thereof because she’d fought them off at every turn. Then, after not winning that war, they’d settled for besting her in a final skirmish. It sucked, but she had to move beyond it. This interlude with Mason, whether it came to anything or not, was a welcome respite to the pressures she’d been under in her old precinct and gave her a chance to get her life back.

“Do you want red or white with our meal?” Mason called loudly from the dining room, interrupting her train of thought. “I’m not sure which is appropriate with eggplant.”

“Anything will do. But I prefer red,” she sent back.

Yeah. And there was that. Mason was seeming much more relaxed with her now that he’d spilled the beans.
